Social Enterprise of Brick Making

Brick kilns are an important source of income and building materials and a feature of the Ugandan landscape. Brick kilns are a fixture of much of the sub-Saharan landscape. Brick making provides employment in the region’s rapidly developing economies and burgeoning populations requiring housing.

One drawback of traditional brick making technology is its reliance on firewood which depletes forests. Compressed earth brick making technology addresses this, as these types of bricks, formed in mechanical presses, do not require firing in kilns. Drying times vary depending on the specific mixture of dirt, clay and aggregate.
